Hall of Fame No. 40

Our Hall of Fame welcomes the popular midfielder Ian Musson

Ian Musson (Midfielder, 1980 - 83)

I've always been a great believer in goalscoring midfielders.

A side that relies too heavily on its strikers to put the ball in the back of the net is always in danger of struggling if they happen to be misfiring.

Ian Musson was one of the best examples of a midfielder with an eye for goal.

He scored many important goals for the Poachers but his game was far more than just that. A powerful physical presence in the centre of the pitch, he was able to impose himself on opponents and yet he also had real finesse at his disposal.

Arguably his finest season was in 1981-82 when he won two of the three player of the year awards on offer (John Cockerill picked up the other one) and was second top scorer with an impressive 17 goals.

To put into context just how important those goals were (behind Martin Johnson's total of 31), the next best tally was a mere four!

Musson won three trophies while at Tattershall Road, helping FC secure the Midland League and Lincs Senior A Cup double in 1980-1 and following that up by retaining the county trophy the following season.

His departure coincided with one of the longest fallow periods in the club's history.
