Hall of Fame No. 44

Goalscoring midfielder Dave Poplar enters the Hall of Fame

Dave Poplar (Midfielder, 1995 - 2003)

There aren't too many members of our Hall of Fame who have been a  big success at both Boston clubs.

The main exceptions are those players who moved across from Boston United with Paul Todd when the new club was first formed in 1964.

Later, players who moved from Tattershall Road across to the other side of town often failed to fit in as well at York Street.

But someone who very much bucked the trend was Dave Poplar.

The rangy midfielder with great heading ability had an immediate impact when Bill Curry brought him to Boston FC in the summer of 1972, scoring on his debut and going on to notch a healthy 10 goals that campaign.

He scored another nine the following season and in 1974-75 his 18 goals helped to fire a squad that also boasted the likes of Phil Scothorne, Mick Parsons and Dennis Reeson to a memorable Midland League title.

Poplar, who now lives in Australia, moved to Northern Premier League side Gainsborough Trinity before switching the Boston United where his versatility proved invaluable for the Pilgrims over five seasons.

Debut: Sat 12 Aug 1972 - Retford 1, Boston FC 3
