Poachers chalk up stunning league cup success

Boston Town 5, Harrowby 0

A Jack Wightwick hat-trick was the centrepiece of a scintillating Boston Town win - their first of the season.

It was a sumptuous attacking display that belied their position at the foot of the United Counties League table.

Wightwick will rightly grab the headlines after another dazzling display - but there were plenty of other eye-catching performances.

Spilsby Town youngster Jordan Smith ran Harrowby ragged on his debut and could have bagged a hat-trick himself. He gave the hosts a fifth minute lead in this UCL Cup tie, sweeping home a pinpoint Wightwick cross from the left.

Smith also rattled the crossbar before the interval and then the post in the second-half as he proved a constant threat with his eager running.

At the break, the only thing that concerned Poachers fans was whether they might be made to pay for not converting their superiority into more goals. But Wightwick raced beyond the visitors' backline early in the second period to double the advantage and from then on Boston were rampant.

Wightwick claimed his second with an unerring volley to finish a breathaking move, with Smith charging down the right and delivering a devastating cross.

Fraser Bayliss added a fourth goal with a clever header from a cross from Craig Parker before Wightwick completed his treble to round off a remarkable victory.

The management team were able to bring on three of Town's young Development Squad players - Tyler Freeman-Burdass, Connor Eyes and George Bevan - as Boston cruised towards a 2nd Round tie against Holbeach.

And even when Town gave away a late penalty, James Lambley dived to his right to pull off a magnificent save and preserve his deserved clean sheet.

Town: J Lambley, L Lambley (Freeman-Burdass), Parker, Ford, M Wood, S Ashton, Bayliss (Bevan), Dykes, Beck, Wightwick, Smith (Eyes)
